You only have 8 seconds to convince your customers to buy/use your product of service. Since 97% of consumers use the web to search for businesses that are providing the goods or services that they need for themselves or their business - that 8 seconds is most likely going to be spent on your website. Does your website pass the "8 seconds" test?
Your website is a sales tool that works for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year - if your site has an outdated design (over 2 years old), isn't mobile-friendly, or hasn't been updated with new content in over a month - it's time to take a look at a new website.
Need More Convincing?
A new website will boost your SERP (search engine results page) rankings. Search engines like Google use cookies and/or spiders to crawl the web and keep track of what website consistently update their content. Google doesn't want to send users to a website that has looked the same since 2010. Google is going to send users to websites that have up-to-date, relevant content that matches the terms for which those users are searching.
As of August 2017, there were 3.5 billion global mobile Internet users, more than desktop Internet users. If your website is not mobile-friendly you are losing a majority of your potential audience and/or revenue. Mobile commerce revenue was $170 billion in 2016 and is expected to grow to $694 billion by 2019.
It is important to cater to mobile Internet users but content is definitely still king. Having a website that makes it easy to add new content is essential if you want your website to be a success in today's digital landscape. When you add new content (such as this blog post), Google sends over its spiders to crawl your website to see what sort of content you created and how it can best direct traffic to that content. The more content you add, the more Google will crawl your website and you will be that much more likely to show up on search engines. A website redesign is also the perfect time to re-evaluate your message and re-work your content to make sure it's resonating with your target audience.
In short, your website is the face of your business online. Each successful business changes their business practices as well as products and services as the times change - the same should be true for your web presence. The most dangerous thing you can say in the business world is "but we've always done it that way".
